Brain Biomechanics: Consolidation Theory of Hydrocephalus. Variable Permeability and Transient Effects
نویسندگان
چکیده
The quasi-steady linear consolidation theory is applied to a model brain under hydrodynamic loading, due to a step increase of intracranial pressure, in order to gain insights into the onset and evolution of hydrocephalus and brain edema in children. Simple asymptotic formulas are derived that shed light on the transient behavior of the dynamics of filtration and of the deformation of the solid matrix, and it is shown that the results hold over time intervals much shorter than the consolidation time which is estimated to be of the order of several hours. Finally, the role of a variable permeability and of the complications introduced by it in the analysis of the transient response are discussed.

Brain Biomechanics : Steady - State Consolidation Theory of Hydrocephalus
In this paper we apply Biot's classical theory of consolidation to the brain in simplified geometry, in order to find explicit formulas for its response to internally applied loads. We show that the observed brain compliance can be understood in terms of Biot's concept of jacketed compressibility, with the result that the Poisson ratio is considerably less than the value 112 used in early numer...

In seepage problems, the coefficients of permeability in Laplace equation are usually assumed to be constant vs. both space and time; but in reality these coefficients are variable. In this study, the effect of material deformation due to external loads (consolidation) and variation of head in the consolidation process are considered. For the first case, formulation of kx and ky can be defined ...
متن کاملQuantitative evaluation of Blood Brain Barrier permeability in transient focal cerebral ischemia in the rat
Introduction: Development of brain edema following focal cerebral ischemia exacerbates primary ischemic injury. Blood brain barrier (BBB) opening is an important part of edema named as vasogenic brain edema. In this study, quantitative alterations of BBB permeability is experimentally evaluated using transient focal cerebral ischemia in the rat. Methods: Two groups of male rats (ischemic and sh...
متن کاملEffect of non-linear permeability in a spherically symmetric model of hydrocephalus.
We examine a spherically symmetric model of the brain and apply non-linear permeability in a small strain poroelastic framework. Numerical solutions to the model show that non-linear effects tend to improve predictions of ventricle wall displacement and pressure increase in acute hydrocephalus in comparison with a constant permeability model. Our model is used to study different mechanisms for ...

Background and Objectives: In the early stages of brain ischemia, the production of free radicals increases. Salvia officinalis is a rich source of antioxidant compounds. Therefore, in this study the effects of hydroalcoholic extract of Salvia officinalis on blood -brain barrier permeability and neurological deficits have been studied. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study 35 m...
